The Ultimate Community
I love my family! My close family (Michele and the children), the wider family (Mum, Dad, brothers, sisters, their children) and my even wider family (uncles, aunties, cousins). We are, I guess, a rare group: all living within 50 miles or so of each other. I also have so many great friends and a few really good close ones.
Yet it is said of this generation that we have never met so many people in our days, and yet been so profoundly lonely. People’s families seem to be in constant flux, work relations are so often temporary, and even in the places we live our neighbours are unknown or little known to us.
This is not the way it is supposed to be! Relationships make life sweet and God is profoundly interested in our need of great relationships. In the beginning when Adam was all alone he made Eve for him, He created the idea of families, He fixed our relationship with Him, He created the Church.
The World is so often a lonely place; the Church is designed to be the opposite of this, it is supposed to be the ultimate community. The question is how do we produce a community that is so amazing nobody would ever want to leave…?
