Contract or Covenant?

As you read this, I am currently on a Turkish beach and loving it! Here’s a simple yet I believe, powerful thought I had a couple of weeks back that I hope helps someone today.

We don’t have a contract with God. We have a covenant with God.

In a contract, if one party breaks the terms of the contract, the other party is released from the terms of that contract. In other words, if you rent a house from a landlord and don’t keep up payments, the landlord no longer has to let you stay there!

However, we don’t have a contract with God; we have a covenant with Him. And the difference is HUGE. The difference is this – your commitments (or God’s commitments) in a covenant are not dependent on the other party’s faithfulness.

God’s covenant of Grace is not dependent on your faithfulness. 2 Tim 2:13 says that “If we are faithless, he remains faithful”. If we had a contract, we would have lost the favour and grace of God a long time ago. But we don’t. We have a covenant which means that God will never love us any less and His covenant promises are there forever – we can’t cause God to forsake His own covenant.

And that blows my mind.
