Why I Love Christmas…
I have always loved Christmas more than any other time of year. As a child (and even now for different reasons!) I loved the mystery and excitement of Father Christmas—the bringer of gifts. I even practised being him as a child! (Yep, honestly, I really did… and if it were possible I would still love to do the full time job!)
I loved the Christmas tree, the decorations, and the time with both our family unit and the wider family. I still love all these things, as those who know us well already know.
But times move on and something far deeper has grown in me over the years: the knowledge that the God of the Universe came down to personally be with and walk alongside mankind and in particular, walk alongside me!
At Easter I get to think through what the Cross and the Resurrection mean to me but at Christmas time I get to wonder at the nearness of God in my life, the gift of His presence and His future for my life. It gives me a chance to remember and celebrate this.
As I’ve got older I’ve begun to understand that God created us to be with Him, enjoy His presence and enjoy the world He created for us. Christmas is the time to maximise all those three aspects and not feel guilty in anyway in thoroughly enjoying the season.
So, may you know the presence of God over Christmas and New Year… may you enjoy it to your heart’s content and as you do, like the first Wise Men… seek out Jesus, worship Him and open the gift He offers!
