Why is Christmas Significant For Me?

Dave Scholes

Dave Scholes

Over the next week or so, we’ll be posting some blogs about “Why is Christmas Significant For Me?” from various perspectives. I’ll be kicking it off today, but expect to see some guest bloggers over the next few days.

Note that the topic for these blog posts is not “What does Christmas mean to me?”, but “Why is Christmas Significant For Me?” There is nothing subjective about the meaning of Christmas. Christmas means one thing, and everything within that one thing; that God loved the world so much that He sent His Son.

And so, why is that one thing so significant to me? Well, the thing that impacts me most powerfully is the fact that Jesus is God (Jn 1:1, 14; Col 1:15); that Jesus is the firstborn of all creation (Col 1:15); that He created all things (Col 1:16); that He holds all things together (Col 1:17); that He is the head of the Church (Col 1:18); and that He was to be the ultimate sacrifice (Col 1:20). And this very same Jesus took the form of a human being. The Creator-God became an infant.

I imagine Jesus the baby lying in his manger 2000 years ago somewhere in Bethlehem and then I try to consider that, in that little package, the “fullness of God was pleased to dwell” (Col 1:19).

For me that truth is absolutely life changing. It shows me that God cares. It shows me that God cares enough to actually enter in to the situation. It shows me that He cares enough to actually lay down His own status (Php 2:6) and become Human. And that very same infant, whilst lying in His manger, was holding the very universe together (Heb 1:3).

When I sing about Jesus in Christmas Carols, that’s the Jesus I picture, not gentle Jesus meek and mild, but the Almighty Creator, Lord and Sustainer of EVERYTHING baby Jesus.
