Why is Christmas Significant For Me? (2)

For many of us it’s a favourite time of the year, full of excitement and joy. For those of us who are mothers it’s also one of the busiest seasons as we rush around buying gifts, writing cards and letters, preparing delicious meals, sorting costumes for plays and parties, ensuring the decorations are up (and that they look tasteful!), the list goes on…
The significance of Christmas really struck me shortly after I gave birth to a son. I remember looking at him as a tiny and helpless human being and totally marveling at how the God of the universe could become so small and reliant on his mother. I reflected on how the day I became a mum my life changed forever, when Jesus came it was not just his mum’s life that would never be the same but the whole world had changed forever. In that instant all of heaven must have been awestruck! No wonder the Angels sang of glory and peace on earth. The night Jesus was born the most amazing peace plan was set in motion, we who were enemies of God could now, through Jesus have a personal relationship with him.
So as a mum I will continue to rush around, the decorations will sparkle, the festive feast will be consumed, gifts will be exchanged and we will laugh and celebrate together. Why do I work so hard to make it special? To ensure that my children know Christmas is not just another day, but the day we celebrate the greatest gift the world has ever known. To help them to understand its not just a nice story of shepherds, angels and kings. To me Christmas is not only significant, it blows my mind!
